Nagaland Disability Groups Struggle With Funding Shortages

Kohima: The State Commission for Persons with Disabilities (SCPD) teamed up with the SELCO Foundation on August 18 to host a capacity building workshop in Kohima. The event focused on teaching Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) how to manage finances, maintain statutory compliance, and improve organizational systems. Many groups struggle to secure funding despite their vital work. Financial gaps hinder disability inclusion across Nagaland.

Tongpang L Jamir, the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, opened the event with a clear message. He noted that while many groups work hard for the rights and empowerment of those with disabilities, they lack the technical knowledge to meet rigid funding requirements. "Nagaland has several genuine and committed organization, NGOs, Societies and Disability Persons Organisations (DPOs) working tirelessly at the grassroots level for the rights, welfare, inclusion and empowerment of persons with disabilities," Jamir said.

Theodore Yanthan, Secretary of the SCPD and Joint Secretary of the Social Welfare Department, urged attendees to identify their internal weaknesses. He wants these groups to become more accountable and sustainable. Experts from Seven Sisters Development Assistance (SesTA) and the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) led technical sessions. These experts covered CSR funding, internal controls, and documentation practices. Roseline S of the SELCO Foundation moderated the day, while Kushem Yemjong delivered the closing vote of thanks.
