Kohima: Nagaland celebrated the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan this week, highlighting a decade of improved maternal healthcare. Health and Family Welfare Minister P. Paiwang Konyak announced that the initiative has provided antenatal care to more than 23,000 pregnant women across the state. The program has been instrumental in the early detection and management of 2,303 high-risk pregnancies.
Speaking at the launch event in Kohima, the minister credited the success to medical teams who travel directly to primary and community health centers to reach vulnerable populations. Portable ultrasound services, supported by the National Health Mission, have further expanded access to remote areas. Konyak stated that this milestone reflected the sustained efforts of specialists, doctors, nurses, ANMs and ASHAs over the past decade.
The PMSMA program provides comprehensive antenatal care on the ninth of every month, focusing on the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. In Dimapur, health units now offer a wide range of free diagnostic services, including blood tests and screenings for various conditions. These facilities also provide essential supplements and counseling on birth preparedness and nutrition.
Dr. Rongsennungla, the District Programme Officer for Reproductive Child Health in Dimapur, emphasized the importance of consistent participation. She urged local leaders to mobilize pregnant women, particularly those who have missed routine checkups, to visit their nearest facility. With 60 designated health units and 336 wellness centers across the state, authorities are committed to continuing the use of tele-consultations and tracking high-risk patients through the Extended PMSMA framework.
