Kohima: The Nagaland Baptist Church Council recently observed Environment Sunday to emphasize the biblical duty of protecting the planet in the face of escalating global climate challenges. The council highlighted that environmental decline has emerged as a significant threat that directly impacts the daily lives of people everywhere.
Dr. Villo Naleo, the secretary of Social Concerns at the NBCC, noted that Christians hold a responsibility as stewards of the earth. He referenced biblical texts including Genesis 2:15 and Psalm 24:1, which serve as mandates to "work and keep" the earth entrusted to humanity. Churches across the region marked the day through special sermons, community service, and awareness campaigns.
Looking toward future initiatives, the council outlined a unified action plan for June 2026. This framework encourages local congregations to participate in waste management education, tree planting, and community clean-up efforts. The organization also urged churches to maintain ongoing environmental projects such as community gardens and youth-led education programs.
To mark the occasion, the NBCC held a joint event at their Bayavü office alongside the Nagaland Pollution Control Board and the Students Christian Fellowship. This gathering brought together various pastors and church leaders from Kohima. Leadership at the NBCC expressed appreciation for the broad support from schools, villages, and civil society groups, noting their intent to foster even deeper engagement in the years ahead.
