Imphal: Suspected Kuki militants and the Kuki National Army-Burma hit Tangkhul Naga settlements in Kamjong district Wednesday. The attackers burned at least 25 homes and refugee shelters near the Indo-Myanmar border. It was a scorched earth campaign.
The Naga Village Guard, or NVG, says the violence began at 1:30 pm. Assailants allegedly torched abandoned houses in Phaimol to provide cover for the assault. Roughly 20 gunmen crossed the Namya River near Border Pillar 102. They carried sophisticated weapons. The NVG described the operation as a "premeditated cross-border offensive."
Residents fled as seven homes in Huimin Thana and 13 in Kherongram went up in flames. Another 20 shelters housing 365 refugees from Myanmar were also destroyed. These people have nothing left. The NVG claims this strike follows a familiar pattern used during earlier attacks on Z Choro, Wanglee, and Namlee.
The raid occurred despite a heavy security presence. Assam Rifles, the Border Security Force, the Indian Reserve Battalion, and Manipur Police all maintain stations nearby. The NVG warned they will take "stronger measures without compromise" to protect their land and people. Officials have yet to verify these claims or offer a response.
