Morigaon Forest Officials Accused of Harassing Legitimate Sand Traders

Guwahati: A truck owner in Assam has accused the Morigaon Forest Department of systemic harassment against legitimate businesses. The complaint centers on allegations that officials target vehicles carrying sand with valid government permits, while vehicles operating without proper documentation frequently pass through unchecked.

The owner claims that a truck traveling toward Guwahati was stopped by staff at Mayong while holding a valid government-issued challan. Despite the document having three hours of remaining validity, the vehicle was detained for roughly three hours. The owner stated, "the vehicle was not allowed to proceed and was detained for around three hours" until the permit expired.

Following the expiration of the challan, forest personnel allegedly seized the mobile phones belonging to the driver and helper to prevent communication with the owner. The officials then attempted to move the truck to the local range office. The complainant has specifically named Morigaon Range Forest Officer Munmi Gogoi in relation to the incident.

Local traders and transporters are calling for a formal inquiry into the department's conduct. Forest authorities have yet to provide an official statement regarding these claims.
