Guwahati: Heavy monsoon rains slammed Assam this week. The first major flood wave of the season left 22,124 people struggling across six districts. Dhemaji took the hardest hit with over 15,000 residents facing rising waters. The Assam State Disaster Management Authority reported 96 villages underwater and 1,690 hectares of crops ruined.

Relentless storms in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh pushed local rivers past their limits. The Disang River topped the danger mark in Sivasagar, forcing officials to watch the banks closely. More than 48,000 animals are now trapped in the flood zone.

Infrastructure is crumbling under the pressure. The Northeast Frontier Railway halted trains between Archipathar and Simen Chapari after a bridge over the Simen River suffered erosion damage. The agency noted that over 110 mm of rain caused the issue, stating, "more than 110 mm of rainfall in the area triggered severe erosion along the riverbank, compromising the stability of one of the bridge’s supporting piers."

Crews are scrambling to restore the tracks. The bridge, built in 1965, remains closed until repairs wrap up. Forecasts suggest more rain is coming. Officials are keeping residents on high alert as the water keeps rising.
