Kohima: The Mokokchung Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) is calling on the Nagaland government to provide a clear timeline for the new ban on tobacco and nicotine food products. The Directorate of Health and Family Welfare issued a notification on June 2, 2026, prohibiting the manufacturing, storage, and sale of items like gutkha and pan masala for one year. However, the order failed to specify when the policy officially takes effect.
Business leaders expressed concern that the lack of a clear start date creates unnecessary confusion. The chamber argued that an immediate enforcement strategy would turn existing inventory into contraband overnight, causing significant financial damage to retailers and wholesalers. MCCI representatives stated, "Such an approach is not business-friendly and would adversely affect the economic health of the state."
The chamber requested a one-month grace period to allow traders to clear their current stock through suppliers. They cautioned that an abrupt rollout could lead to illicit black market activity and ultimately mirror the struggles of the Nagaland Liquor Total Prohibition Act. While the MCCI supports the public health goals behind the directive, they stressed that authorities must engage with stakeholders to ensure fair enforcement and avoid the harassment of legitimate business owners.
