Mizoram Weighs More Taxi Permits as App Registration Stalls

Aizawl: Mizoram officials might hand out more taxi permits soon. The state launched the Mizotaxi app on July 1 to stop overcharging and track fair prices for cars, auto-rickshaws, and bikes. But commuters need more drivers. By the June 30 deadline, only 974 vehicles signed up for the platform.

The Transport Department says this low turnout falls short of actual travel needs. They want a standard fare system like other states. The government claims the move will help passengers get better service. Officials confirmed they will track demand closely and act if they fall short. The goal is simple.

Drivers are fighting back. The Aizawl Two Wheeler Taxi Association refuses to back the app in its current state. They want the government to dump the 500 rupee registration fee and update the 2024 fare rates immediately. An association leader argued the payment process adds too much work for drivers. He noted that "collecting fares from passengers through the app and transferring the money to the government would create unnecessary operational difficulties for drivers."
