Aizawl: The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change officially named Mizoram University’s Natural History Museum as a Designated Repository. This move makes the Aizawl institution India’s 21st such facility. It will now safeguard biological specimens for research.
The National Biodiversity Authority pushed for the move. They want to fill gaps in how India tracks its biological wealth. The museum sits in the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. That area is a global engine for species variety. Experts there will now curate voucher specimens of plants and animals.
The museum team will focus on pteridophytes and macrofungi. They will also handle reptiles, fishes, and insects like beetles and butterflies. North East India holds over 7,500 species of flowering plants. It also hides more than 2,000 types of animals. Officials claim the recognition improves scientific infrastructure. According to the Ministry, the status "enhances India’s scientific infrastructure for biodiversity conservation while expanding the national network of repositories dedicated to safeguarding the country’s biological wealth."
This work will fix blind spots in national data. The institution opened back in 2022. It brings specialized taxonomic skills to the table. Scientists expect better documentation of lesser-studied creatures. The museum is ready for the task.
