Mizoram Political Parties Demand Voter Roll Cleanup

Aizawl: Mizoram political parties want ghosts off the ballot. Officials met July 7 to demand the deletion of names lacking verifiable links to the 2005 electoral records. They intend to scrub the draft rolls clean. The parties passed a joint resolution targeting entries labeled as having "No linkage with last SIR" for immediate removal.

The push for accuracy requires boots on the ground. Parties plan to work with NGOs and civil society groups to vet doubtful entries. Chief Electoral Officer Garima Gupta reported that 46,163 voters remained unaccounted for after the latest revision. Death, permanent relocation, and untraceable status complicate the numbers. Some voters even rejected the process on religious grounds.

Mizoram managed to digitize all collected forms, hitting a 100 per cent completion rate. This marks the state as a leader among the 16 regions currently undergoing the third phase of the Special Intensive Revision. Current data shows 828,906 total electors, with women holding the majority at 429,881. Aizawl district leads the pack with over 272,000 voters. Tiny Hnahthial holds the bottom spot with just over 15,000 residents. The state expects to publish the final rolls on September 6.
