Aizawl: Mizoram is looking for help from the United Nations to survive the next big disaster. Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Prof. Lalnilawma met with Kumar Kishore, the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, at Mizoram House in New Delhi. They want better technical support and a global exchange of knowledge.
The state faces constant threats from landslides, rockfalls, earthquakes, and environmental decay. Climate change is making these risks worse. Lalnilawma briefed the UN on current efforts to enforce smarter urban planning and mandatory geotechnical investigations for all new buildings. The state is also pushing to build up Thenzawl in the Serchhip district as a Peace City to take the developmental weight off Aizawl.
Mizoram is already working with the National Disaster Management Authority on landslide mitigation, early warning systems, and resilient infrastructure. Lalnilawma pushed for deeper international ties to harden the state against future geological and climate shocks. Kumar Kishore praised these efforts during the meeting. He stated, "UNDRR is ready to facilitate international knowledge exchange, connect the state with global experts, and highlight Mizoram's best practices on international platforms."
Both parties agreed to keep working on the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction. They also planned the upcoming North-East Regional Disaster Management Conclave. Mizoram will host the event later this year to unify the region against natural hazards.
