Aizawl: Mizoram Minister Prof. Lalnilawma met with the National Disaster Management Authority on July 27 to demand official disaster status for African Swine Fever. He was joined by Disaster Management Secretary Sushil Singh. The state needs money for struggling farmers. Frequent outbreaks have crushed the pig-rearing sector.
Economic losses are piling up. The minister wants federal backing to assist those hit hardest by the disease. Beyond the pig crisis, officials mapped out a path to survive natural threats. Mizoram sits in a dangerous spot. The state faces regular risks from earthquakes, landslides, and forest fires.
Discussions covered the National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Programme and the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Programme. They reviewed pending projects meant to harden the state against catastrophe. Lalnilawma called for building the State Disaster Management Authority, growing the Aapda Mitra community program, and syncing up with other North-Eastern states.
The NDMA pushed for smarter land use and tougher building codes. They demanded resilient infrastructure and better public education to stop future disasters. The agency also highlighted the need for school safety. The NDMA said it will help with technical guidance, noting, "The NDMA reaffirmed its commitment to extending technical guidance and institutional support to the Government of Mizoram." Authorities expect the state to run regular preparedness drills to keep students safe.
