Aizawl: Mizoram is doubling down on disaster prep. Disaster Management and Rehabilitation Minister Lalnilawma met with Kumar Kishore, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, at Mizoram House in New Delhi to secure stronger ties with the UNDRR. The state needs help. Mizoram faces a mounting barrage of landslides, rockfalls, earthquakes, and environmental decay fueled by a shifting climate.
Lalnilawma pitched a plan to curb these threats. The state is pushing risk-informed urban planning and tighter building codes that now require mandatory geotechnical investigations. To take the heat off Aizawl, the government is developing Thenzawl, located in Serchhip district, as a Peace City. These efforts run alongside ongoing work with the National Disaster Management Authority on early warning systems and infrastructure.
The minister urged the UN to provide the technical muscle needed to boost institutional capacity. Kumar Kishore praised the state’s aggressive stance. He promised that the UNDRR would help link local officials with global experts to broadcast the state's work. "Kumar Kishore appreciated Mizoram’s proactive approach towards disaster risk reduction and expressed UNDRR’s willingness to facilitate international knowledge exchange, connect the state with global experts, and highlight Mizoram’s best practices on international platforms."
The two parties also prepped for the upcoming North-East Regional Disaster Management Conclave. Mizoram will host the event later this year. The goal remains clear. Both sides pledged to advance the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, targeting better infrastructure and sharper preparedness against the region's geological and climate-driven hazards.
