Mizoram Museum Named India's 21st Biodiversity Repository

Aizawl: The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change officially named the Natural History Museum in Mizoram as the country's 21st designated repository. This move follows a direct recommendation from the National Biodiversity Authority. The central government issued the formal notification on June 19, 2026.

A senior ministry official confirmed the status update. "Based on the recommendation of the National Biodiversity Authority and after due examination of the proposal, the central government notified the institution as a Designated Repository on June 19, 2026," the official said. The designation falls under the Biological Diversity Act, 2002.

This museum keeps biological specimens safe. It holds verified material for research and species identification. Staff will now store voucher specimens of macrofungi and pteridophytes. They will also manage collections of reptiles, fish, moths, and beetles. The site will serve as the official home for type specimens of new species found in the region.

Mizoram University opened the museum in 2022. It sits inside the Indo-Burma Biodiversity Hotspot. This region hosts thousands of unique flowering plants and animals. Officials noted that the facility helps document endemic life, such as the recently discovered amphibian Leptobrachella tamdil. The repository fills gaps in the national network and supports ex situ conservation goals under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.
