Aizawl: Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga wants a clear policy for refugees pouring in from the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. He spoke Thursday at an Aizawl seminar hosted by The Zozam Times. Displacement of Zo ethnic groups creates real security risks. The state needs a plan. Sapdanga said, “In this situation, it is necessary to carefully consider how Zo ethnic people and other communities fleeing Bangladesh should be received and accommodated. The government must devote serious thought to this matter.”
Refugees face violence and land theft at home. Churches and political groups are helping these families. These people include members of the Bru and Chakma communities. Lalmuanpuia Punte, a political adviser, said the state must track why these people are crossing the 318-km border. Lawngtlai, Lunglei, and Mamit districts sit on that border. Over 2,000 Bawm people arrived since 2022 to escape military operations.
Groups like the Young Mizo Association and student unions worry about undocumented migrants. Tensions remain high. A report from the Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti shows 154 people suffered from rights abuses in early 2026. This includes 10 deaths and attacks on homes. The report blames security forces, army-backed factions, and land grabbers. It also claims the Bangladesh government failed to enact the 1997 peace accord. Corruption and violence continue to drive the exodus.
