Aizawl: Joseph Vanlalhruaia rose from a history of drug addiction to capture the World Muaythai Organization title. The Mizoram native made history in March 2024 at the 6th International Thai Martial Arts Games in Pattaya, Thailand. He stopped Taiwan fighter Yeh Lichih in the 51 kg category to claim the belt.
The path was brutal. Joseph grew up around rampant substance abuse and eventually fell into the same cycle. He worked as a daily-wage laborer to get by while battling social stigma. He chose to flip his life through the discipline of martial arts. He succeeded.
Joseph trains out of Kochi at Spartans Martial Arts and Fitness. He also co-founded Thai Machines Xtreme Gym and leads the Team Joseph Movement back home in Mizoram. His reach extends past the ring. Since winning the world title, he beat a ONE Championship fighter from Vietnam, proving his win in Thailand was no fluke.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma recognized the athlete for his historic achievement. Local supporters call him the Cinderella Man. He now spends his time pushing young people to break their own habits and find focus in sports. Regarding his path from the depths of addiction to the top of the sport, he offered a blunt assessment. "Life is hard—but you gotta fight through it."
