Missing Balat girls found safe in Shillong

Shillong: Two minor girls from Mawpait Tlongpleng village vanished Wednesday morning. Mebaaihun Thongni, 13, and Mebariiaka Thongni, 11, ended up in Shillong. They intended to visit nearby Pomblang village. Instead, they boarded a bus bound for the city. They fell asleep in the front seats and woke up at Anjalee Bus Stand in Mawlonghat.

The girls packed clothes before leaving. Family members suspect the trip was intentional. “Maybe they were scared to tell us the real reason. But seeing that they had already packed their clothes, it appears they had planned to leave the village,” a relative stated. The 11-year-old girl remembered her father had kin in the Nongrah area. She spotted a Maximo maxi cab marked for Nongrah and successfully guided her friend to the neighborhood despite only visiting the city twice before.

Relatives launched an intense search across Ri-Bhoi, Nongstoin, and Jowai bus stands. They feared the worst given recent news about missing minors. Police located the girls at Nongrah around 2 pm. Officers took them to Rynjah Police Station to record statements. Authorities then sent them to Ganesh Das Maternity and Child Hospital for medical exams. On Wednesday evening, they were turned over to the Child Welfare Committee. The 11-year-old is known as a responsible child who cares for her younger siblings. It remains unknown why the pair left their homes.
