Meghalaya Targets West Khasi Hills as Muga Silk Hub

Shillong: State officials met at the Don Bosco Meeting Hall in Riangdo to draft a scientific plan for sericulture. The effort aims to turn West Khasi Hills into a central hub for Muga seed cocoons. This initiative operates under the Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan 2.0 program. It targets better rural livelihoods and job growth.

Cabinet Minister and Mawshynrut MLA Methodius Dkhar led the event as chief guest. The Central Silk Board’s Muga Eri Silkworm Seed Organization and the District Sericulture Office organized the session. Around 35 progressive farmers from the Muga, Eri, and Mulberry sectors joined representatives from various government departments and local producer groups.

Scientist Mahasankar Majumdar presented the development plan. The roadmap focuses on cluster-based planting and better disease control. It pushes for smaller, manageable plantations to lower risks for farmers. Officials believe the district’s climate is perfect for Aherua and Bhodia Muga crops. Moderate temperatures improve silkworm survival and boost cocoon quality.

Dkhar pledged the state’s full backing for these economic improvements. He noted, "The government's support for measures aimed at strengthening the sericulture sector and creating sustainable employment opportunities, particularly for rural youth and women in West Khasi Hills," is a priority. The session ended with all parties promising to coordinate on the new strategy.
