Shillong: Meghalaya officials are rolling out a new mandatory registration system for all visitors. The scheme mimics the Inner Line Permit process used in neighboring states like Nagaland and Mizoram. Tourists must show up at designated checkpoints to verify their identity and travel plans.
The first site opens in Umling, Ri-Bhoi district. More hubs are coming soon to the Garo Hills. Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira said the mechanism would require visitors to register at designated centres where officials would verify their identity, travel purpose and supporting documents.
Authorities want to track who enters the state. They claim the move stops illegal infiltration while keeping foreign nationals in check. Officers will look over travel papers and confirm IDs at these stops. The system provides real-time data on all arrivals.
These hubs double as tourist centers. Visitors can grab a bite or use restrooms while staff process their paperwork. Officials say the setup creates a cleaner, more organized way to monitor the state border. It replaces guesswork with hard facts.
