Shillong: Meghalaya will soon force all visitors to register before entering the state. The government wants a better grip on security and traveler movement. Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira confirmed the plan will track identity, documents, and the reason for each trip.

The first check-in hub opens at Umling in Ri-Bhoi district. Officials intend to build more sites across the region, including the Garo Hills. While the state rejects the Inner Line Permit, this new process mimics existing systems in Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, and Manipur. It is about control. Authorities want a live database of every person crossing the border.

Staff at these centers will scan passports and travel papers to spot illegal infiltration. Shira stated, "The proposed system will require tourists to check in at designated registration centres, where officials will verify their identity, supporting documents and the purpose of their visit."

These buildings offer more than just oversight. They will function as service hubs, providing restaurants and amenities for tired travelers. Officials say this dual approach makes tracking easier while keeping the tourist experience functional.
