Shillong: Heavy monsoon rains hammered Meghalaya this week, damaging infrastructure and forcing 32 villages to deal with landslides and flash floods. The damage spans across districts in the Garo and Khasi Hills.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma held a virtual meeting with deputy commissioners on July 11 to assess the chaos. He ordered all departments to stay on high alert. Crews must keep machinery ready for immediate deployment. The government wants roads cleared fast.

Erosion chewed into the approach road for the Mineng Bailey Bridge near Gasuapara. Traffic there is now limited to light vehicles only. The state pushed for an alternative route while engineers plan quick repairs. Sangma directed officials to ensure timely relief for families caught in the storm. He said that district administrations must maintain "close coordination among district administrations, block-level response teams and line departments to ensure swift response to emergencies."

The India Meteorological Department warns that heavy showers will likely persist until July 15. The government is telling locals to avoid dangerous slopes and flooded streams. Stay off hill roads during heavy rain. Do not take unnecessary risks.
