Shillong: Five people died Friday night at a construction site in the Lapalang area of Shillong. Four laborers entered a well to pump water. Fumes from a running generator quickly filled the space. One worker escaped and raised the alarm.

Two brothers from the neighborhood tried to save the trapped men. They climbed into the well but the fumes overcame them too. East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem confirmed the state rescue team pulled five bodies from the site. Doctors at the North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences declared the men dead on arrival.

Police have filed a case at the Rynjah Police Station to determine what happened. Officials are waiting on the results of a post-mortem to confirm the cause of death. "The exact cause of death will be confirmed after the post-mortem examination," police said.
