Shillong: Meghalaya is pushing to resolve six remaining flashpoints on its border with Assam. The government issued a strict 45-day deadline for three reconstituted Regional Committees to settle the disputes. These areas, including Langpih and Blocks I and II, have remained locked in stalemate for three years.
BJP legislator AL Hek warned that politicians must ditch the games. Success depends on the ground reality. Hek wants leaders to stop hunting for political points and focus on the people stuck in the middle. "The people residing in these areas must be brought to one platform," Hek said.
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, Power Minister Mehtab Lyngdoh, and Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar lead the respective panels. Their teams include MLAs, district council reps, and local officials. They must now coordinate with their counterparts in Assam to map out the zones.
The committees have a busy schedule. They must cross-check village records, verify geographical borders, and conduct field visits. Every panel must create an asset register and deliver a final report once the 45 days expire.
