Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma laid the foundation stone for four major road and connectivity projects worth approximately Rs 488 crore in East and West Jaintia Hills on Thursday. These projects cover a total distance of 108.24 kilometres and are designed to improve local infrastructure, stimulate economic activity, and unlock new opportunities for tourism and mining.
The largest initiative is the Rs 355-crore Dkhiar-Sutnga-Saipung-Pala-Semmasi road, which is funded by the World Bank under the Meghalaya Logistics and Connectivity Improvement Project. Other developments include the improvement of the Dkhiar-Sutnga-Saipung-Moulsei-Haflong road, an approach road to Chympe Waterfalls, and the upgrade of the Sutnga-Khaddum road. Additionally, the government launched the Rs 76.43-crore Shkemtalang to Lumshyrmit road project, which features a bridge over the Myntdu river to improve access to NH-6.
Sangma confirmed that tenders for these projects are already complete, with construction expected to commence within 45 days. Addressing residents in Latyrke village, the Chief Minister noted that these upgrades would provide better access to healthcare and education. He emphasized that the state is currently prioritizing a balanced approach to development and remains committed to public interests despite regional economic challenges.
The Chief Minister also addressed the region's coal mining sector, stating that the government is actively negotiating with the central government to lift the current ban. He expressed his support for transitioning to scientific mining practices that align with legal and environmental standards to ensure the sustainability of the industry.
