Shillong: The month-long Khet Bachao Abhiyan campaign launched on June 1 in Meghalaya, aiming to bolster sustainable farming, soil conservation, and efficient crop management. Initiated by the College of Agriculture in Kyrdemkulai and the College of Community Science in Tura, the movement includes awareness sessions, field demonstrations, and farmer outreach activities across the state.
During an event in Lummynri village, organizers detailed the harmful effects of excessive chemical fertilizers and pesticides on soil quality and human health. The campaign promotes natural farming, balanced nutrient management, and the use of green manure to restore agricultural sustainability. Prof. Ram Singh, Dean of the College of Agriculture, urged local farmers and rural youth to embrace modern, precision agriculture to secure long-term productivity.
In the South West Garo Hills district, the College of Community Science held a focused discussion and input distribution program at Sonamite village. Dr. Namita Singh, the Dean-in-Charge, emphasized the necessity of community engagement in modernizing farming. She stated, "She encouraged farmers to adopt sustainable agricultural practices to improve productivity and strengthen livelihood security."
The initiative continues through June 30, 2026, with faculty, students, and village leaders working together to provide farmers with the knowledge required for effective pest management and scientific crop protection. These sessions aim to ensure that rural communities across Meghalaya can transition toward methods that protect their environment while strengthening their economic futures.
