Shillong: Meghalaya finally broke out of the bottom tier in the federal school education rankings. The Ministry of Education’s Performance Grading Index 2.0 for 2025-26 shows the state jumping two grades. It climbed from the Akanshi-3 category to Akanshi-1. The state’s score hit 525.71, up from 448 just last year.
This jump marks a 31 percent increase in points over three years. State officials credit eight years of focused policy shifts. They tightened governance and overhauled teacher pay. Specifically, they point to the Structured Pay Framework. It brought fixed-pay teachers into a system providing annual increments and retirement benefits.
The government moved fast to consolidate resources. They cut the number of schools from 14,641 down to 11,443 through clustering. This aimed to trim waste. The Education Department said the progress reflects a long road of changes, stating that "the latest report provides a roadmap for the next phase of reforms."
Big gains hit the books across six key domains. Governance scores doubled, rising from 40.5 to 85.6. Infrastructure also saw a sharp lift. Officials used funds from Mission Education and the Asian Development Bank to upgrade facilities. The Chief Minister’s IMPACT initiative also helped lift test scores. Despite these wins, the department admits it has more to do. They remain focused on fixing gaps in learning quality and governance to push for higher marks next time.
