Shillong: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma promised to personally oversee a study into widespread anaemia among pregnant women in East Garo Hills. Opposition Leader Mukul Sangma pushed for the investigation. He reported high caseloads during visits to local health centres. Many patients currently require transfers to outside facilities for care.
State authorities track every pregnancy using a specialized software system implemented seven years ago. This data protects patient anonymity while highlighting high-risk cases. "About 10-15 percent are high-risk mothers and most of them are anaemic. We have the full spectrum for the entire state," Conrad Sangma said.
The government moves high-risk mothers to transit homes fifteen days before their due dates. These women receive financial aid and extra nutrition. This policy helped slash the state Maternal Mortality Ratio by 55 percent since 2017. Officials claim this marks the sharpest drop nationwide.
Mukul Sangma warned that community and primary health centres treat the condition as a routine matter. He linked maternal health to child development and warned of potential stunting issues. The Chief Minister agreed to a special audit to fix the problem. "We don't want a single mother to lose her life while bringing a life to this world," Sangma said.
