Shillong: The Meghalaya government has officially launched an online registration system for students and professionals from the state who are currently residing overseas. This initiative, managed through the state's official Meghalaya One Portal (http://meghalayaone.gov.in), aims to establish a comprehensive central database to enhance the authorities' ability to provide swift support during unforeseen crises.

According to a notification issued by the Department of Home (Political), the government identified a significant gap in its emergency readiness, as it currently lacks consolidated records of residents living in foreign countries. This lack of information has historically complicated efforts to track and assist citizens during emergencies such as war, civil unrest, natural disasters, or other serious incidents.

The newly established database is designed to streamline critical coordination efforts, including evacuation and repatriation processes. By gathering necessary details—such as contact information, permanent home addresses in Meghalaya, emergency contact details for guardians, and current foreign addresses—the state aims to ensure that no resident is left without support when navigating dangerous or volatile situations abroad.

While registration is entirely voluntary, the state government strongly encourages all students and professionals currently working or studying overseas, as well as those planning to travel abroad in the future, to enroll. Addressing privacy concerns, officials have confirmed that all submitted data will remain strictly confidential and will not be accessible to the public. The information will be utilized exclusively for official emergency response purposes to facilitate the safe return and well-being of the state’s citizens.
