Shillong: Food safety authorities in Meghalaya seized a consignment of pointed gourds in Shillong on Friday following a surprise market inspection. Officials suspect the vegetables were treated with artificial coloring agents to make them appear fresher and more visually appealing to customers.
Deputy Commissioner of Food Safety D B S Mukhim confirmed that samples have been collected and sent to a laboratory for testing to verify if any unauthorized dyes or harmful substances are present. This operation comes after similar concerns were raised in Assam earlier this week, where reports suggested that traders were using artificial additives on produce.
Regarding the ongoing investigation, Mukhim stated: "A consignment has been seized and samples have been sent for analysis. Further action will be taken after the laboratory reports are received."
If the testing confirms that the vegetables are adulterated, authorities intend to initiate strict legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act. In the meantime, officials have urged local consumers to remain cautious and wash all vegetables thoroughly before consumption. The department plans to continue these inspections across markets in the state to ensure public health and prevent future food adulteration.
