Meghalaya Farmers' Market Cuts Out Middlemen

Shillong: The Meghalaya government is cutting out the middleman. Its monthly Farmers' Market in Shillong now links growers directly to city shoppers. This move keeps more cash in farmers' pockets.

Organized by 1917 iTEAMS and the Department of Agriculture, the seventh edition of the event featured everything from pineapples and plums to organic greens. Farmers report that this direct access has improved their take-home pay and built stronger trust with their customers.

Returning sellers claim the direct feedback loop is a game changer. One participant noted, "direct interaction with buyers has strengthened consumer confidence and expanded market opportunities for their produce."

The program now works with the delivery platform SOMOI to reach households across Shillong. This partnership moves more goods and creates delivery jobs for local youth. Officials view the market as a vital tool to support small-scale growers and clean up the state's food supply chains.
