Shillong: The Meghalaya State Commission for Women has summoned four former cricket officials to answer for their failure to address sexual harassment complaints. The notice targets Rayonald Kharkamni, the current secretary of the Meghalaya Cricket Association, alongside former president Nababrata Bhattacharjee, former treasurer Dhrubajyoti Thakuria, and former cricket operations manager Shining Star Lyngdoh. They are scheduled to appear before commission chairperson Iamon Syiem on May 26.
Official notices state that these individuals were aware of complaints filed by the under-23 women's cricket team last December but did not take necessary action. The commission reports that the association failed to launch an internal inquiry, did not respond to the complainants, and allowed the accused head coach and team manager to remain in their positions without suspension. The accused coach and manager already appeared before the commission, though the results of that hearing remain private.
The commission is investigating this administrative failure as a potential violation of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women Act of 2005. Officials have been ordered to produce all internal records and correspondence related to the matter to determine exactly what they knew and why they failed to intervene. The inquiry aims to uphold statutory obligations regarding the protection of women's rights in sports. Failure to comply with the summons may lead to legal consequences under the act.
