Meghalaya BJP MLA Advocates for Ground Level Action in Assam Border Dispute

Imphal: Senior BJP leader and Meghalaya MLA Alexander Laloo Hek stated on May 19 that the state is actively pursuing a resolution to the long-standing interstate boundary dispute with Assam through consistent dialogue. Acknowledging the political pressure facing both administrations, Hek emphasized that the Meghalaya government remains committed to avoiding confrontation by seeking a mutually acceptable agreement. To facilitate this, the state has formed committees led by legislators in various districts to conduct detailed field assessments, as the MLA believes the complex issue cannot be fully addressed within administrative conference rooms alone.

Regarding regional security, Hek highlighted the urgent necessity of completing fencing along the India-Bangladesh border to address growing concerns over infiltration. He pointed to successful progress on similar projects in West Bengal and argued that identical measures should be prioritized in Meghalaya, despite ongoing logistical hurdles and localized disputes in specific areas.

The discussion also touched upon the economic impact of border closures, with Hek raising alarm over the continued suspension of cross-border trade at local haats. These closures have caused significant financial hardship for residents living near the border. Although the Meghalaya government has repeatedly engaged with the central authorities to reopen these trading points, Hek noted that the process is currently delayed by broader security evaluations being conducted by the federal government.
