Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP cut ties with former member Sanjay Sharma on Saturday following accusations that he insulted the Bible. Party spokesperson Mariahom Kharkrang declared that individuals with a narrow or communal mindset hold no spot in the organization. The party is now investigating whether Sharma maintains primary membership status, promising strict disciplinary action if he does.
State leadership remains firm on the issue. The party officially equated the alleged disrespect toward the Bible to the vandalism of a Swami Vivekananda statue. The party claims such behavior mocks its principles of positive secularism and integral humanism. "Such irresponsible acts, reeking of a reprehensible mindset, only discredit the party’s ingrained values and bring disrepute to our Prime Minister himself," the statement said.
Confusion surrounding Sharma's status persists. While the party clarified that Sharma resigned from his organizational post on May 8, he officially resigned from all party membership on Saturday, citing health reasons. The state BJP pushed authorities to pursue legal action against him. This incident forces a difficult hand for the party as it tries to grow its footprint in Meghalaya where religious sentiment runs deep.
