Shillong: The Meghalaya BJP ended talk of sitting out the next Shillong Assembly by-election. Party leaders confirmed on Sunday they intend to field a candidate as soon as the Election Commission sets the schedule. State general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna pushed back against claims that the party would stay out to help its Meghalaya Democratic Alliance partners. The rumors suggested the BJP might repeat its previous strategy of backing an ally instead of running its own person.
Pohshna dismissed the gossip. "Not true. BJP will definitely contest the by-election. Among our alliance partners, two have already announced their candidates. BJP will do so once the official announcement is made," he stated. Two alliance partners have already named their candidates for the seat.
State BJP president Rikman G. Momin also shut down the talk. He warned that people spreading these rumors act like they rank above the national leadership. Party decisions come only from authorized officials. Pohshna questioned the integrity of anonymous sources floating this information, labeling the reports as half-baked. Nine people have applied for the BJP ticket. The Central Parliamentary Board will review these applications and pick the final candidate.
