Shillong: Meghalaya officials cleared plans to build St. Xavier’s University. The state cabinet signed off on the project this week. They handed over 50 acres of land at Mawkhanu to get the campus off the ground.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced the deal on July 8. The government is charging a discount rate of roughly ₹1 lakh per hectare for the site. This move aims to fix gaps in the local education system. Sangma called the project “an investment in the future of our youth.”
The university plans to bolster both higher and technical learning. State leaders expect the new campus to open doors for students across Meghalaya and the broader Northeast. The government wants to bring elite schooling to the region. They hope this work drives education to greater heights.
