Medical Interns Protest Over Unpaid Stipends

Imphal: Medical interns at Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences and Churachandpur Medical College entered their second day of protests today. They gathered outside the Directorate of Health Services at Lamphel. They want their money. The interns demand the state government pay the stipends they earned while working full-time clinical shifts.

The group claims they sent multiple requests to the state since November 2025 without a single result. Financial strain is growing. Intern Thoudam Karles told reporters that officials failed to act despite clear promises. "He added that both the Health Commissioner and Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh had earlier assured the interns that the issue would be resolved, but no payments have been made so far."

The interns point to National Medical Commission rules. These mandates require institutions to pay foreign graduates the same rates as other interns. The Supreme Court has also weighed in on these payment requirements. The protesters maintain they perform the same work as their peers and deserve equal pay. They are waiting for the state to follow the law.
