Guwahati: Mira Rao stands accused of a massive financial swindle in the Tinsukia district of Assam. Residents of Margherita claim she tricked families out of 50 lakh rupees and bags of gold ornaments. She promised them high returns that never materialized. She vanished once the loot was in her hands.
Rao spent months hiding out in Guwahati. On Saturday, she finally turned herself in at the Margherita Police Station with a lawyer in tow. A crowd of angry investors swarmed the station immediately. They wanted their savings back. Tensions spiked as locals demanded justice for the lost gold.
The victims are now leaning on the Margherita Co-District administration to force a payout. They want the maximum penalty for her crimes. One local described the scene as the police began their deep dive into the case. Officials say they are working to "ascertain the full extent of the alleged financial fraud and identify the total number of victims involved." Detectives are now mapping out exactly how many people fell for the scheme.
