Imphal: Meira Paibi women's groups and local organizations held widespread sit-in protests across Manipur’s valley districts this Saturday. The demonstrations served two primary purposes: condemning the bombing of an Imphal College principal's home and calling for the release of three former Arambai Tenggol members.

Tensions flared after unidentified attackers detonated a bomb in the front yard of Principal Mairembam Chandra’s residence near Sangaiprou FCI Road around 2:00 am on June 20, 2026. In response, groups such as the Sangaiprou Apunba Nupi Lup and local youth committees gathered at Sangaiprou Community Hall. Participants denounced the attack on a family residence and urged authorities to identify and arrest those responsible immediately.

Simultaneously, protesters mobilized in locations including Keishampat Leimajam Leikai, Kakching, and Mayang Imphal to support Mutum Naoba, Haorokcham Manaocha, and Kangabam Somanand. These three individuals were recently detained by security forces on various charges. Supporters argued that these volunteers acted only in self-defense when security forces failed to protect Meitei civilians.

Regarding the arrests, the groups insisted that the former volunteers surrendered their weapons under an agreement made during President’s Rule. Protesters claim they received assurances that no charges would be filed against them for their past activities. At a separate sit-in held at the Thoubal Melaground Community Hall, members issued a stern warning that they will continue to escalate their actions if the authorities do not provide an "unconditional release" for the former members.
