Manipur Policeman Investigated Over Six Naga Murders

Imphal: A Kangpokpi district police officer is under the microscope. Investigators believe he may have helped abduct and kill six Naga men during the ethnic strife in Manipur. Kangpokpi Police interrogated the officer after evidence surfaced linking him to the crimes. The mutilated bodies turned up on June 10.

Released Naga hostages provided the lead. They mentioned the officer in their statements to investigators, triggering the latest round of questioning. These six men were snatched on May 13 from Leilon Vaiphei village. This happened right after three church leaders were killed in the same area.

Hostage takers grabbed twelve other people that day, including women and children. They eventually let them go. The Manipur Government handed the case to the National Investigation Agency to handle the fallout. The agency has yet to make any arrests. A government official stated, "The investigation is still underway and the exact role of the police personnel has not yet been established."

Forty-four civilians were taken captive in Kangpokpi and Senapati districts on May 13. While many hostages walked free in June, the search for the missing men ended in tragedy. Union Home Minister Amit Shah reviewed the security situation this Saturday. He ordered the National Investigation Agency to pick up the pace. Shah warned agencies to target those responsible regardless of their affiliation.
