Imphal: Manipur's Public Health Engineering Department is digitizing its water network. Officials claim revenue jumped 50 percent after they rolled out online billing and smart meters. They also installed a SCADA system to track water flow across the grid in real time.
The department manages 12 treatment plants serving Greater Imphal. The massive Chingkheiching plant now pulls water from the Thoubal Dam to feed taps as far as Ghari. Old iron pipes are hitting the scrap heap. Crews are swapping them for durable ductile iron to stop leaks. "The programme is aimed at promoting transparency, strengthening public awareness and supporting good governance through timely dissemination of authentic information," department representatives said during a Meet the Press event.
Rural water projects remain a top priority. The Jal Jeevan Mission currently reaches 38 percent of homes. Officials expect the Asian Development Bank project to push coverage to 58 percent. Workers are scrambling to finish these household connections. The state set a hard deadline of March 2027 for the external project. The remaining Jal Jeevan work should wrap up by March 2028.
