Imphal: Manipur is clearing the path for its biggest urban road project. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways just handed the Detailed Project Report for a 25-kilometre elevated corridor to the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited. This move signals a push toward construction.
The project carries a price tag of Rs 3,691.81 crore. It aims to unclog Imphal by diverting traffic off the main highways. NHIDCL Deputy General Manager Rafique Ahmad Choudhury says officials expect the project to receive final approval before the Manipur Legislative Assembly elections in early 2027.
Technical reviews are already underway. Representatives from the Ministry, NHIDCL, and the Nagpur-based consultancy firm M/s K&J Projects Private Limited are meeting to hash out the details. Union Minister Nitin Gadkari is backing the plan, following up on a 2022 promise to the state.
The four-lane road will start at Koirengei Junction. It will split at the Raj Bhavan Rotary. One section will run to Manipur University, while the other heads to Imphal International Airport. A separate two-lane flyover will join the CM Traffic Rotary to the City Convention Centre. The structure will have a vertical clearance of 5.5 metres.
Supporters say the project will do more than just move cars. It promises lower fuel costs, faster logistics, and a smoother commute. As one official noted, the project will "not merely connect roads—it will connect aspirations."
