Manipur Minister Pushes for Voluntary Arms Surrender to Halt Arrests

Imphal: Manipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam wants to stop more arrests of Arambai Tengol members. He is pushing for a path forward that avoids heavy enforcement. The minister met with the state Director General of Police to review the current crackdown. His primary goal is to get illegal weapons off the streets.

Intelligence reports indicate civilians and armed groups still hoard a significant number of guns. Govindas urged these individuals to hand over their weapons without being forced. "Such cooperation would help avoid further arrests and enforcement action," the minister said. He views this de-weaponisation as the only way to end the cycle of violence.

The state has seen rising public anger after the National Investigation Agency arrested three Arambai Tengol members last week. Protesters continue to demand their release. Meanwhile, the new DGP is working to open up movement in the hill areas where violence persists. The valley remains quiet, and the government wants to keep it that way. Govindas warned locals to avoid any activities that might stir up new trouble.
