Imphal: Manipur launched an Intensified Pulse Polio Immunisation campaign on Sunday. Health authorities demand that every child under five gets the oral vaccine. This effort guards against a disease that causes lifelong disability. India has been polio-free for over ten years, but officials insist that consistent vaccination stops the disease from coming back.
District Health Societies and the National Health Mission are running the program. Teams set up hundreds of vaccination booths across Imphal West, Thoubal, Ukhrul, Churachandpur, and other districts. The state aims to cover thousands of children through booth-based shots and door-to-door visits.
In Churachandpur, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ph. Henkhoneng Mate gave drops to local children. She warned against skipping regular care. "Polio can cause lifelong disability and that routine immunisation against all vaccine-preventable diseases should not be neglected," she said. Health teams there set up 321 booths to reach 27,190 children.
Kangpokpi officials paired the polio drive with the Stop Diarrhoea Campaign 2026. They are prioritizing kids near international borders. Meanwhile, Pherzawl set up 59 booths to cover 3,414 children. Workers will finish the effort with house-to-house visits on June 29 and a final mop-up drive on June 30.
