Manipur Hostage Release Halted Amid Naga Community Protests

Imphal: The planned release of 14 Kuki hostages in Manipur was cancelled on June 1 following widespread protests from Naga organizations. The release, originally scheduled for 2 p.m., was intended to follow an arrangement involving the United Naga Council and the state government.

Public opposition surged after stakeholders questioned why the Kuki detainees were being released while six Naga civilians, who were allegedly abducted by Kuki groups from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13, remained missing. Protesters gathered in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts to demand the immediate return of the missing individuals, who have been held captive for over three weeks without any confirmed word on their well-being.

In response to the growing unrest, the United Naga Council held discussions with various stakeholders to gauge public sentiment. The council ultimately decided to suspend the release to address the concerns of the affected communities. In an official statement, the organization confirmed the cancellation of the event, citing the need to prioritize the prevailing sentiments of the Naga public.
