Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh honored several writers during the 2024 State Literature Awards ceremony held at the Palace Auditorium in Imphal. Organized by the Directorate of Language, Planning and Implementation, the event celebrated the cultural contributions of local authors.
Kangjam Ibohal Singh received the State Lifetime Achievement Award, which included a citation, a shawl, and 4 lakh rupees. Arambam Ongbi Memchoubi was presented with the State Award for Literature for her poetry collection titled Thamamba Ahing, receiving 3 lakh rupees. Additionally, Akoijam Jiten was honored with the State Young Writer’s Award for his book Khyum Nongdam Kao and received 1 lakh rupees.
During the ceremony, officials noted that these specific lifetime and young writer accolades were introduced for the first time. The event also served as a platform for the Chief Minister to address the ongoing instability in Manipur. He noted that recent unrest has damaged the state economy and negatively impacted daily wage earners.
The Chief Minister urged citizens to avoid protests involving blockades or vandalism, specifically mentioning damage to public safety infrastructure along Tiddim Road. He called for collective efforts to maintain harmony and restore normalcy across the region. Khuraijam Loken Singh also spoke at the event, acknowledging that the awards were delayed due to the difficult situation and reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the literary community.
