Manipur Honors Slain Assam Rifles Soldiers After Deadly Ukhrul Ambush

Imphal: Manipur officials gathered at Imphal International Airport on July 8 to pay their final respects to two soldiers. Gunmen killed Warrant Officer Balwan Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh during an ambush in Ukhrul district. The fallen men served with the 40th Battalion of the Assam Rifles.

The attack occurred July 6 around 1.40 pm. The soldiers were heading back to their base in Shangshak when the firing started. Ukhrul Police Station Officer-in-Charge Inspector Marchang W confirmed the details. He stated, "An ambush attack took place on the 40 Assam Rifles convoy on July 6 at approximately 1.40 pm while they were travelling to their base in Shangshak. Two personnel—Warrant Officer Balwan Singh and Havildar Chandra Mohan Singh—sustained fatal injuries and died on the spot."

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh and top military brass laid wreaths during the ceremony. Rain fell hard throughout the event. Police and Assam Rifles units scrambled to the scene shortly after the shooting. They secured the area and started a joint search operation. Investigators have yet to track down the shooters. No suspects are in custody. Security forces remain on high alert as the hunt for the gunmen continues.
