Imphal: Fourteen civil society groups from Manipur are headed to New Delhi on July 5. They want a National Register of Citizens update before the government starts the next Census. The delegation aims to press federal officials on demographic concerns.

Convenor Shanta Nahakpam met with the Manipur Governor at Raj Bhavan on Tuesday to discuss the plan. They spent over an hour outlining why indigenous communities need protection from illegal immigration. Nahakpam said, "The proposed Delhi visit forms part of a series of initiatives launched by the organisations in support of NRC updation prior to the Census."

The coalition is also pushing to revive the State Population Commission. They want Manipur represented on the federal high-level committee currently studying demographic shifts. The Governor promised to help the group get meetings with the Union Home Secretary and the Registrar General of India.

The organizations are asking the public for help. They want citizens to drop off data and suggestions at the IPSA or IPAK offices before the team leaves. Previous efforts included a mass rally and meetings with the Chief Minister and the Union Minister of State for Home Affairs.
