Imphal: Manipur officials are done with highway blockades. Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam declared in the State Assembly on Thursday that his government will pursue strict legal action against anyone obstructing National Highways. This warning arrives after Congress MLA Th. Lokeshwor challenged the administration, noting that supply trucks remain stuck despite official claims of open roads.
The state is citing the National Highway Authority Act of 2002 to justify the crackdown. Director General of Police orders now require all Superintendents of Police to actively dismantle disturbances. Security forces are currently escorting public and private vehicles to prevent stone-pelting and violent attacks. Officials insist that NH-37 and NH-02 remain open for all members of the Meitei and Naga communities.
Lokeshwor pushed for clarity on the identities of those stalling traffic. He asked, "Are they terrorists or Civil Society Organizations?" Many goods-laden trucks stay stranded on NH-37 while stalled shipments drive commodity prices to alarming levels across the region.
