Manipur gets first 3D breast cancer screening facility at RIMS

Imphal: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal opened its first 3D Digital Mammography facility today. Located in the Department of Radiodiagnosis, the machine uses tomosynthesis to catch breast cancer early. This is a game changer for local women.

RIMS Director Prof. G. Sunilkumar Sharma led the launch alongside top hospital officials. He touted the machine as a massive step forward. "The installation of the 3D Digital Mammography Machine is a landmark achievement for the institute and the state," Sharma said.

This is the first unit of its kind in Manipur. Only two other machines exist in the entire North East. The hospital plans to keep costs low, charging about 300 rupees per screening. Officials hope this move boosts patient care and helps students with new research.

RIMS isn't stopping here. Leadership plans to roll out a Biplane Interventional Radiology System by the 2026-27 financial year. They also aim to open a NIDA Department soon. The facility aims to modernize regional medical infrastructure one step at a time.
