Manipur Footballers Demand Better State Support

Imphal: Nine Manipuri players from the Indian Women’s Football team met Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today. They want more help for the sport. These athletes recently won the 6th South Asian Football Federation Women’s Championship in Goa. They brought the hardware home.

The group includes Dangmei Grace, Elangbam Panthoi Chanu, Phanjoubam Nirmala Devi, Sorokhaibam Ranjana Chanu, Yumnam Sarita, Hemam Shilky Devi, Naorem Priyangka Devi, Serto Lynda Kom, and Toijam Thoibisana Devi. Twenty-three players represent India. Nine of them hail from Manipur. Beyond the SAFF win, several team members played in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup in Australia. Four also competed at the 2023 Asian Games in China.

The delegation raised concerns about talent leaving the state. They asked the Chief Minister to organize annual tournaments. This would boost grassroots development. They want to keep a steady flow of talent moving toward the national squad. Career advancement for players working in state government departments also topped the list. They want recognition for their service.

Chief Minister Khemchand acknowledged their success. He promised the government would work to improve sporting infrastructure. “The visiting players also urged him to ensure better career advancement and promotional opportunities for sportspersons serving in various State Government departments, in recognition of their contributions and achievements in sports.” The state intends to create more opportunities for women in the game.
